This is a wonderful an colorful Fang Mask from from the peoples of Gabon, Guinea.The Fang tribal people are spread over a vast area along the Atlantic coast line of equatorial Africa and can be found in Cameroon equatorial Guinea and Gabon namely along the bank of the Ogowe river. The Ngil masks were worn by members of a male society of the same name during initiations of new members. Masqueraders, clad in raffia costumes and are attended by helpers would materialize in the village after dark, and be illuminated by flickering torchlight's. These Fang masks were worn by itinerant troubadours and for hunting and punishing sorcerers, and are painted with colors and outlined in black. The Fang mask style are large elongated masks covered with kaolin and features a face that was usually heart-shaped with a long fine nose. These ceremonies were traditional such as weddings, funerals and used in traditional dances when persecuting evil spirits. Each Fang mask in uniquely done and always different in color and style.
