This is a beautiful Yoruba Beaded Blue and Red Snake Cowrie Shell Sash comes from Nigeria. This is a beautiful example of a diviners belt or kings belt from the Yoruba Tribe of Benin Nigeria. Each color of bead is associated with a different empowering God (Orisha). The face is Oduduwa, the legendary first Yoruba ruler. The face also represents royal ancestors who are said to watch over and protect all the royal lines. Triangles are meant to reflect sacred qualities. Snakes, Lizards, Crocodiles and Birds are symbols of the mystical powers of women. A diviner is one of the very few non royal persons permitted to use solidly beaded materials. These are usually reserved for the Yoruba kings. The Belts are as wonderful as wall hangings and decorative art in your home, as well as complimenting your collection.
