This is a unique African Vintage Etched Ebony Embracing "Lovers" Carving from the Makonde Tribe of Tanzania. Ebony is an exceptionally hard and dense black beautiful wood found in East Africa. In Africa it is also known as “Mpingo”. Ebony wood is one of the most intensely black woods known, which combined with its very high density, fine texture, and the ability to polish it very smoothly, has made it very valuable. In fact it is one of the most expensive woods. The Makonde tribe in Tanzania (East Africa) uses this wood to make carvings, known as “Makonde carvings”. Their artistic output is both traditional and contemporary. When finished, the carvings are polished and the wood quite literally shines. This a beautiful Makonde Ebony sculpture that is part of tribal history and would be a wonderful to add to your collection or to give as a gift in your collection.
Has a beautiful patina and is in good condition.
