This is a very Old and Unique Leather Animal Hide shield from the Toposa Tribe of North African. This shield is made of light colored, hard and thick leather, with a rectangular, convex shape and a robust, vertical, thick middle ridge. Constructed along a wood strut on the back by means of a tightly plaited leather binding. This stick also serves as grip. A leather hand guard and a carrying loop are interposed between grip and shield on the back. These shields were used by the male tribesmen. A shield is a piece of personal Armour held in the hand or mounted on the wrist or forearm. Shields are used to intercept specific attacks, whether from close-ranged or projectiles such as arrows, by means of active blocks, instead of providing passive protection. This old animal shield would be a great addition to your collection.
This shield shows age, has some tears, but is in good condition.
