This is a vintage One of a Kind African Lega Carved Bone Fertility Figure from the People of Zaire. This bone fetish, is hand carved from cow bone using wood, wire, and pigment. These figures are individually owned by only the highest ranking members of Lega society. The genius of the Lega artist lies in his ability to produce a work that fulfills the requirements of the Bwami patron, fits perfectly within the its belief, and yet is artistically unique. Various categories of objects are used in connection with the association’s activities, including anthropomorphic and zoomorphic figurines. Each anthropomorphic figurine symbolically represents a named personage with particular moral qualities or defects that are expressed through dance and song. Although quite primitive and coarse in style and execution, very expressive Lega sculpture convey the strong sense of balance, form and serenity, and such objects are frequently called 'fetish' figures, referring to the fact that they were believed to have magical powers. This very unique Lega Fetish and would be a wonderful addition to your collection.
