This is a wonderful Village Clan Mask which is attached to Rattan from the Angoram Village, Lower Sepik River Region, Papua New Guinea. This mask was used in clan initiation ceremony's. During initiations, the elder who wears the mask would serve a variety of spiritual, cultural and decorative purposes. Most of the carvings found in Papua New Guinea are from the Sepik Region, and the use of masks are an important part of their traditional culture. This unique mask would be a wonderful addition to your collection.
