This is a Beautifully Carved Teakwood and Red Lacquered Ornate Handled Rice Scoop. The handle is a uniquely detailed carved monkey sitting on a tree branch atop a leaf trimmed rice scoop that comes from Thailand. The dark red lacquer, applied over black lacquer is the traditional manner of these artisans. The black undercoat shows through in some areas, giving this early 20th century piece an inviting patina. This very detailed rice scoop and handle with a monkey resting on top of a the tree branch with carved leaves is a whimsical and wonderful piece of utilitarian folk art from Thailand.
