This is a Rare and Beautiful Carved Wood Canoe Mast Pulley from the Massim Culture, Papua New Guinea. This form of a Massim sail hoist and is very unusual for being carved with human spirit figures. This would have been lashed to the top of the mast on a ceremonial canoe, one rarely used, only for important ceremonies or trading trips. The ancestral figures would have guided the canoe toward favorable winds and away from any impending troubles. The sail hoist is this elongated open section where the piece would have been lashed vertically to the mast, and the smaller hole with its obvious grooving is where the rope passed.
