This is a beautiful African Hand Carved Wood Stool with Etched Designs on a Sloping Backrest from the Senufo People of the Cote' d'Ivoire. The stool is wonderfully simple sculptural wood stool with a curved seat that is a symbol of nobility among the Senufo people. Senufo stools like this are carved from single blocks of wood with a thick, rounded edge seat. This stool has a large carved square leg in the front and two heavy legs in the back to support a person if they are leaning or just sitting. These are are wonderfully simple sculptural forms. The form of this stool is characteristic, and of a type that is made to the present day. What makes this stool exceptional is its extraordinary wear and evidence of very long use within the culture. These stools, like family heirlooms in western cultures, become more treasured in Africa as they age and acquire memories of the ancestors who have used them. This large stool would be used in a Senufo household. A wonderful addition to any collection of home.
The stool shows age, distress marks , but is in good condition.
