This dramatic bark cloth Kavat mask is created by Central Baining peoples of New Britain, part of the New Guinea Islands and are used in the night dances, a nocturnal performance lit by firelight. The Central Baining practice both day day and night dance rites. The night dance, by contrast, is accompanied by a male orchestra and dedicated to spirits, animals, and commodities associated with the surrounding forest. The masks of the night dance often represent the spirit of animals of the bush' particularly animals associated with the hunt. The Mask itself is Bark cloth with Bamboo and Reeds for the framework and tree Sap and Berries for the dyes. This Banning Fire Dance Mask is Museum quality and a real collectors item.
