This is a Vintage Bamboo and Brass Khmer Bell Necklace from Cambodia. Bells from Khmer have served many purposes. The temple bells were esteemed by the Monks and used in spiritual practices.
The small bells were suspended on the eves around temples, and used to signal activities to rise, mediate and chant. The pastoral bells were worn by cattle or buffalo. When traveling the animals would follow the sound of the bell worn by the lead animal. The sound would also worn travelers of their presence. The bells would scare off predatory animals and help farmers locate their herds. They were also used on elephants so they could be set free to forage in the jungle.
