This statue is believed to be a medium to the spirit world. A way for the living to communicate with there departed ancestors. Used for solicitation, protection, good fortune and health. Tribal art of this region is very difficult to acquire with the political situation, Timor is a remote island in Indonesia and masks and statues in general from Timor are scarce.
