This is a Fabulous Antique Ornate Hand Carved Wood Butterfly Motif Indian Spice Container with Spice Residue with a Pivoted Swivel Lid that Opens to a Several Compartment Spice Container. Any Indian kitchen is incomplete without a spice box. Indian cooking methods usually require a quick succession of spices and powders to be added while the oil is at the right temperature. A spice box ensured that all the spices were quickly and easily available. The little containers would be replenished from a larger stock when the spice ran out. A spice box was always found near the cooking stove, and wood was the perfect material to retain the freshness of the spice and keeping the moisture out. A spice box would increase the aesthetic appeal of the kitchen lending a touch of creativity to the cook who beheld it. This is a lovely example of Indian rustic hand carving which combines beauty with practicality. This old wooden Spice Box was primarily used in the kitchens of India to store spices by the women in the 19th century. The spice residue and stain are still seen in this container. This would be a lovely addition to your collection or home.
