This is a beautiful and Old Yaka Initiation Mask from Zaire in the Democratic Republic of Congo. Yaka masks are mainly worn during initiation ceremonies. The Mbala mask, with its protruding ears and an organic spiky coiffure is at the head of the ceremonies. The Yaka initiate mask, called Kholuka, is very well known with its bulging or tubular eyes and snub nose and often boasts a large raffia headdress. The masks each have different functions, some serve to ward off evil spirits or spells whilst others assure the future fertility of a young initiate. They also frighten the crowd, cure illnesses and cast evil spells. This Yaka mask was used during initiation ceremonies and represented male cult heroes associated with beauty and the life force of earth. This is a an amazing mask in detail and style, and would be a wonderful addition to your home and collection.
