This is a Old Fabulous African Ewe Carved Wood Standing Female Ancestral Statue from Togo and Ghana. The Ewe people, who live in southern Togo and Ghana are the eastern neighbors of Asante, and they make wooden statues with figurative motifs and symbols. These Aklama statues, roughly carved out of wood represent the protective spirits and are kept by the Ewe in their local shrines. Women play a significant role in the Ewe culture. These statues are carved for female ancestors and to ensure fertility within the tribe. The carving of Ewe dolls also were significant to ensure that children would be born healthy, with their arms and legs intact. Ewe female symbolism is powerful. This statue would be a wonderful addition to your collection or home.
