Papua New Guinea Abelam Balsa Wood Headdress

$416.00 $520.00

This is a fabulous and outstanding " Notu" South Abelam Headdress from the Wosera area of Papua new Guinea. These distinctive South Abelam headdresses were worn by initiated males. A Notu Headdress is Wood and is made to be worn on the back of a dancer’s head during yam ceremony or special events and initiations. This Notu wood piece is made of balsa wood, which is favored because it is light. It is painted with bright colors on both sides many of which are made from local seeds collected during the rainy season. The headdress is attached to the back of the head through the small round hole as a part of a ceremonial dance costume with extensions attached to the side with rattan fiber to achieve the desired tear drop shape (said to represent the front of an Abelam men's house. It still retains some of the paint with different designs on front and back. This headdress is simply fabulous! The design with the bright colors and patterns on both sides make this headdress one of a kind. An amazing item for a collector and what a magnificent piece to display in your home. This headdress is fragile.
