This antique copper ankle currency was originally created in SE Democratic Republic of Congo ( Central Africa ).
They were worn by both men & women around the ankles and arms and was a form of currency.Thought probably to be a form of "Lobola",dowry or bride price it's purpose seem to be for either the completion or initiation of serious agreements or payments.
The DRC has rich copper deposits but due to the difficulty of mining copper before heavy mechanized equipment was available all copper had to be extracted by hand.It was a valuable natural resource and these pieces were hammered out from very high quality raw copper which could be smelted into other forms if when needed.
