This is an old and rare Oval Himba Women's Neck Ring that comes from the tribal people of Northern Nambia. The Himba have clung to their traditions and the beautiful Himba women are noted for their intricate hairstyles and traditional jewelry. Himba women have a particularly distinctive appearance. Each morning, they cover themselves jewelry included with a mixture of butter fat, red ocher and local herbs that both gives their body the smooth, reddish appearance the Himba find attractive, plus offers some protection against the desert sun, but it mostly symbolizes the earth and blood (life-force). The ocher is key to the Himba ideals of beauty. A multitude of leather, plant fibre and beaded circlets adorn the neck, each has it’s own patina from repeated layers of Otjize, which is form of Himba paste and makeup. Himba women like to use the wires of the electric fences to make their jewelry. Married women wear copper or iron necklaces which are held held together with wrapped twine and are very heavy. This is a fabulous Old and rare jewelry neck ring worn by the Himba Women. It was collected in the field and shows age and wear. A really significant piece of Himba jewelry and culture that would be a lovely addition to your collection.
