In traditional Africa, shields were used not only as defensive weapons, but also as decorative or ritual objects filled with symbolic meaning. These shields are carved from one piece of wood. In the country of Cameroon shields were used for defense but now more so as decorative commemorative reminders of past important battles. The beautiful deep concise etchings have tribal significance. Though not at arms now the custom made armaments are very well crafted and make for excellent exotic wall decorations. The shield on display has been beautifully crafted from a native hard wood. The shield features precise raised symmetrical designs that creates an attractive grooved relief on the face.
