This is a very unique Female Figure from Kambot Village, Middle Sepik River,Papua New Guinea. The Iatmul people are among the most prolific and accomplished of the region's woodcarvers. The primary focus of artistic expression is the men's ceremonial house. Statues and figures are usually decorated with carved ancestral spirit faces. This wooden carved Female ceremonial ancestor spirit statue with cowrie shell eyes, Raffia and an ancestral face. Inside the ceremonial house sacred carvings such as debating stools, masks, ancestral figures, are stored away from the eyes of women and children. Latmul art even in ordinary houses have a lot of finely decorated objects. Always a representation of an ancestral spirit figure and mask are produced using a wide variety of materials. This figure is also revered in the belief that they allow connection to the various spirits they represent. A wonderful male ancestor spirit figure to add to your collection and home.
