This is a unique Old Bamana Carved Wood Male Statue from Mali. The carved statues of the Bamana are dedicated to the fertility principle . Statues, on the other hand, are mostly dedicated to the fertility principle, gwan. Women looking for children would offer sacrifices at the shrines of gwan sculptures. The gwan statues usually come in groups and of different sizes. A typical gwan statue collection will feature a central mother-and-child statue, the father and other adult male and female figures. Gwan statues are enshrined and taken out only during annual ceremonies. The differentiating style of the gwan statues includes arms separated from the body. The Bamana people adapted many artistic traditions, and artworks were created both for religious use and to define cultural and religious differences. Bamana statues and their artistic traditions had been part of sacred vocations, created as a display of religious beliefs and used in ritual. Each special creative trait a person obtained was seen as a different way to please higher spirits. Powers throughout the Bamana art making world were used to please the ancestral spirits and show beauty in what they believed in.
