This is a beautifully carved wood Mother holding a Child Statue from the Hemba Tribal peoples of Congo. This superb Luba statue is so distinct stylistically that the hand can be clearly identified, the extraordinary domed forehead, the open almond shaped eyes, raised scarification. The gesture of the arms is highly inventive. The traditional carvings are for ancestor and spirit cults, for initiation, medical and divination purposes. This was collect in the field and shows some age. It would be an amazing addition to your collection and home.
