This is a wonderful Fang Mask from from the peoples of Gabon. The Fang tribal people are spread over a vast area along the Atlantic coast line of equatorial Africa and can be found in Cameroon equatorial Guinea and Gabon namely along the bank of the Ogowe river. The Ngil masks were worn by members of a male society of the same name during initiations of new members. Masks like these represented the spirit of an ancestor and were used for social control by Ngil, the judiciary association. This mask would be a fabulous addition to your collection as well as to decorate your home. Fang masks, were among the most influential on 20th C. modern art.
