This is a beautiful Old African Venda Doll from South African. This doll is an example of a Pedi Doll, Child of Birth or NGwana Wa Pelego.
The doll represents adult women exclusively, with glass beaded adornments over beaded sheaths and other accoutrements signifying their age, status and gender. A mother will give her daughter a doll or her wedding and on her wedding day, the bride gives it to her in-laws who name it, and this name is given to the first born. After the first child is born the doll is destroyed so the beads distributed so as to deter any evil that might attach to the child because of its spiritual connection. Dolls like these also assist Pedi women who have not conceived and to protect and celebrate those who have. It is said that dolls can cure infertility, act as a surrogates for the deceased children, protect a family from harm and encourage a bereaved mother to try for another child. These dolls are very rare and hard to find.
