This is a lovely African Hand Card Blackwood Wood Old Sculpture from the Makonde Tribal People of Tanzania. One of the reasons why the Makonde master artists have grown in repute over the years is because of their versatility. These artists show supreme skill in creating more traditional pieces of art, as well as dabbling in the more abstract. This particular statue of a Makonde head is made using natural African Blackwood, from the Mpingo tree. The intricate manner in which they are carved creates abstract form and is the artist's vision of the spirit world.
