This is a beautiful Old Handwoven Zulu Straw Mat (Icansi) embellished with embroidered designs. This example is a work of a skilled artisan combining both the techniques of weaving and embroidery . Traditionally mats like this example were used for multiple purposes: by young girls during their initiation for sitting on during the initiation. At the end of the initiation mats were discarded. Generally large mats would be used for sleeping and sitting inside and/or outside the house. Small ones were used as placemats to serve food. A great addition to your home or collection.
