This is a great Senufo Face Helmet Mask from the Cote D’Ivoire. The Senufo are a traditional agricultural people of the northern savanna, renowned around the world for their woodcarving. In traditional Africa, helmets were used not only as protection but also to show status or rank. They were carved from wood, and sometimes cast in bronze or woven and embellished with horns, symbolic forms, cloth, cowries, metal strips, and beads. While wood Senufo helmets tend to be surmounted with crescent-shaped bull horns reminiscent of Viking helmets, this superb helmet is magnificently detailed with a high relief carving of a perching bird with the Senufo icons and framed by an unbroken arches. This really unusual helmet mask would be a wonderful addition to your home or to your collection.
