Basket African Winnowing Woven Reed Tray Basket Kenya

Sorry, this item has sold.

This is a beautifully woven "uteo" in Swahili means a Winnowing Tray from Kenya. This tray was traditionally used to separate the chaff from grain by letting it blow away in the wind. It is also used to remove weevils or other pests from stored grain. Threshing, the loosening of grain or seeds from the husks and straw, is the step in the chaff-removal process that comes before winnowing. In its simplest form it involves throwing the mixture into the air so that the wind blows away the lighter chaff, while the heavier grains fall back down for recovery. The uteo is basically made of dried reeds with some being dyed and others left in their natural shade. The Swahili use the dry inner and outer bark of a coconut palm to plait the tray. The edges are coconut wood wrapped in fiber for strength. Every Kenyan home has one of these, no matter how modern or traditional in its decor. However, in recent times it is fast becoming a design statement in the home, whether it is used for its original purpose or not. The sizes and shapes of these trays vary depending on the use and also the region of origin. This tray is beautiful in designs and pattern. It was collected in the field. A beautiful addition to your home or collection.
